A summer night in 2022

Summer is practically over, and a lot of us are going back to school and returning to work after our summer vacations. I am now teaching in a classroom setting for the first time in three years, and I recently had the pleasure of reconnecting with a few of my former students. That got me to thinking about “Jennifer” a former student and First Generation Professional, who was in my class a few years ago.

“Jennifer” learned about the MorenoMethod in the Sociology course that I had taught. In that class, I introduced students to the MorenoMethod, which I had developed. This program includes utilizing skills such as resourcefulness, self-care, interpersonal communication, and building community to improve all aspects of life.

Not long ago, while having a conversation with “Jennifer,” I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she had used what she had learned from the MorenoMethod to get herself a huge raise at work. The two skills that she credits for helping her through the salary negotiation process were resourcefulness and interpersonal communication.

When it comes to interpersonal communication, the MorenoMethod teaches how to communicate effectively by being mindful of your voice tone, body language and word choice when dealing with others. It also shows how to be persuasive and express yourself in such a way that the other person can empathize, and as a result, understand your point of view.

As a First Generation Professional, “Jennifer,” had not been completely comfortable speaking to authority figures, much less asking for a raise. But by utilizing the MorenoMethod, she went into the meeting with her supervisor with a greater sense of confidence, and was able to assertively ask for the raise she believed she deserved.

I was both proud of her and pleased that by using the MorenoMethod, she was able to advance her career.
