“Resourcefulness allows you to think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems.”
Resourcefulness allows you to think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems. It also helps you make the most of the resources you do have. By demonstrating your resourcefulness, you can show potential employers that you have the skills they are looking for.
“Building community increases social capital by creating trust, connections, and opportunities.”
Some first gen professionals may not know where to start in building their community. With the MorenoMethod, I emphasize the importance of building community and provide a guide to help you seek the types of people who you want in your life to help you build your social capital.
“Empathy is at the core of effective interpersonal communication.”
The MorenoMethod shows first generation professionals that empathy is at the core of effective interpersonal communication. Empathy, is the ability to see a situation or circumstance from another person’s point of view and requires vulnerability, from both the listener and the person seeking to be understood. That is what drives connection. Empathy requires us to take the perspective of someone, without judgment, and be able to communicate that you truly understand their perspective.
“Hold the vision. Trust the process.”
I can tell you from personal experience, as I’ve practiced self-care, I have become more in tune with my physical, mental and emotional well-being. When you are rested, and well nourished, you can think more clearly and be more in control of your life. And, you are more likely to achieve your goals.
“Surround yourself with people who truly have your back and have your best interest at heart.”
For First Generation Professionals the community you belong to can have an even greater impact on your life than the influence of your family alone. And that’s because in some cases, First Gen Professionals may not be exposed to as wide a variety of life paths and career choices as they would like. By purposefully expanding their network and community, they increase their chances of interacting with people who can be a source of personal and professional inspiration and help advance their careers.
“It’s not the lack of resources, it’s your lack of resourcefulness that causes failure.”
Resourcefulness is a great example of what is called a “transferable skill” because it is a quality that can be applied to many aspects of life. For example, employers seek out potential candidates with a high degree of resourcefulness when they make hiring decisions. On a personal level, resourcefulness can also be a useful skill in dealing with the ups and downs that life can bring.
“Rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation: that’s what self-care is all about.”
As First Generation Professionals, we typically juggle multiple responsibilities—balancing home and family, while maintaining work and/or school responsibilities. Practicing self-care allows you to carve out time in your day or week to do something for yourself.
“Know your worth—then add tax.”
When it comes to interpersonal communication, the MorenoMethod, teaches how to communicate effectively by being mindful of your voice tone, body language and word choice when dealing with others. It also shows how to be persuasive and express yourself in such a way that the other person can empathize, and as a result understand your point of view.
“Do not go where the path may lead—go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail.”
For those of us who are the first in our family to graduate from college or start a career, we are the trailblazers. And when you are “the first,” it often comes with its own unique set of challenges and barriers. The biggest one, being, you don’t know what you don’t know.
“The best way out is always through.”
My hope is that sharing my story will be helpful to someone else who is weathering their own storm. I’ve gone through a lot of healing, reflection, laughter, and growth - it's been a lifelong journey and one that has led me to this moment with you.
